SCANDINAVIAN REDWOOD OR WHITEWOOD: The most widely used timber in the UK for years, Scandinavian Redwood and Whitewood grow in the well managed forests of Scandinavia and the coldest parts of Northern Europe. The cold climate ensures slow growth. The growth rings are much closer together than faster growing trees from warmer climates. As a result the timber is heavy and durable with a close grain pattern. The wood is seasoned and kiln dried to achieve the correct moisture content before it is machined. Redwood and Whitewood are so similar in appearance and performance that it is difficult to tell the difference. Both are classified as slightly durable and treatment is required for outside use. The forests of Scandinavia and Northern Europe have been responsibly managed on a sustainable basis for centuries so Scandinavian Redwood or Whitewood is an enviromentally friendly choice.

PRESSURE TREATED TIMBER: Pressure treatment is a lifetime preservative treatment. The preservative is forced deep into the timber under pressure in a vacuum and penetrates below the surface. All other treatments apply a coat of stain to the surface of the timber only. With pressure impregnated timber, the chemicals are permanently bonded to the cell structure of the wood at a molecular level. Tanalith E is a widely used water based version so pressure treated wood is often described as tanalised. Pressure treated wood is almost colourless except for a slight green tint caused by the copper content in the preservative, though if you want a coloured finish you can paint over pressure treated or tanalised wood with a suitable wood preservative in any colour. Please note that whilst no further anti-rot treatment is ever needed, the timber is still subject to seasonal variation when exposed to the elements and so will expand and contract as it gets hot/cold, wet/dry, etc. If required, periodically applying a good quality waxy wood treatment can help ensure any wooden panels stay fully watertight all year round.

TIMBER SLATTED ROOF: This attractive and durable timber roof is ideal for a garden gazebo. It requires little or no maintenance, it provides shade and it can withstand a light shower or even a heavy downpour for a short while. The roof features prefabricated panels which are fixed into substantial hip rafters. Cover battens to each side of the panels reduce rainwater penetration at the edges. The roof angle and the overlapping roof boards ensure that most rainwater drains away. In prolonged rain some moisture may seep in and drips may occur. Sealing with silicone or mastic will further improve the waterproofing, for example at the edges of the roof panels. The timber is pressure treated so it will last well even if it is never treated from new.

PEFC CERTIFIED TIMBER: By choosing this product, you are supporting responsible management of the world's forests. This product is PEFC certified. Our PEFC licence number is PEFC/16-37-2190. Our PEFC chain of custody certificate code is INT-PEFC-COC-1119. To verify our PEFC membership visit the PEFC Member Search and search for Summer Garden (full name "Summer Garden and Leisure Buildings Ltd"). Please note if you want a genuine PEFC certified product it must include a valid PEFC claim, which must include a valid licence number and/or certificate code from a genuine PEFC member. It must also be described as PEFC Certified or PEFC Pure. Claims that "we use PEFC timber" or "our suppliers are PEFC certified" are dishonest, because the PEFC certifies products and not suppliers. If the claim is invalid the timber is not PEFC certified.

ABOUT THE PEFC: PEFC, the Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification, is a leading global alliance of national forest certification systems dedicated to promoting sustainable forest management through independent third-party certification. Since 1999 the PEFC has certified over 280 million acres of forest in 56 countries. PEFC promotes the stewardship and use of forests in a way, and at a rate, that maintains their biodiversity, productivity, regeneration capacity, vitality and their potential to fulfil, now and in the future, relevant ecological, economic and social functions, at local, national, and global levels, and that does not cause damage to other ecosystems. PEFC certification ensures that forest-based products reaching the marketplace have been sourced from sustainably managed forests.

HEXAGONAL BUILDING SIZES: For ease of reference these hexagonal gazebos are measured as a rectangle. The first dimension listed is the overall width from side to side and the second dimension is the depth from front to back. The overall width is measured at the widest point from corner to corner. The depth is measured at the narrowest point from wall centre to wall centre. Sizes are sometimes rounded to the nearest nominal size for ease of reading but the correct external wall sizes are listed alongside the price. These sizes do not include the roof overhang. Many other suppliers quote the overall roof size which is much larger. All sizes are approximate.
